GREENCASTLE — An autopsy Monday determined a Putnam County Sheriff’s Captain died of injuries from his crash, but did not reveal the accident’s cause.Former sheriff Jim Baugh’s squad car skidded off wet pavement on U.S. 231 and flipped into Big Walnut Creek north of Greencastle on Friday. He was trapped underwater for about 15 minutes, police said.Baugh, 60, was on his way to a minor accident. He died at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, about five hours after the 4:30 p.m. wreck, Sheriff Mark Frisbie said. The autopsy concluded Baugh died from injuries sustained during the crash, but did not rule out a medical condition such as heart attack or stroke that could have occurred prior to the wreck, Indiana State Trooper Rich Myers said.Trooper Kenny Brummett investigated the crash site Monday, but the report is not expected for at least a week, Myers said.Baugh would have retired in April after 32 years with the department. He was Indiana’s first officer to die in the line of duty in 2004 and the first in Putnam County history. Police from throughout the state will give Baugh a hero’s send-off Wednesday. The Indiana Fraternal Order of Police organized a funeral with full honors. It will include a ceremony in which dispatchers radio his car a final time, signifying the end of Baugh’s duty. Baugh’s wife, Laura Lee, and two sons, Jason and Jerrod, survive. Jerrod is an Indiana State excise police officer. State police expect traffic congestion during the funeral procession and encourage the public traveling in the area to choose alternate routes.Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today in Greencastle Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. in Neal Fieldhouse in the Lilly Physical Education and Recreation Center, DePauw University. Internment will be at the New Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, is handling arrangements. The funeral procession will travel from College Avenue, west onto Hanna Street, north onto Jackson Street, east onto Washington Street, south onto U.S. 231, west onto Keightly Road, south onto Cemetery Road, east onto Jones Road (County Road 300S), south onto U.S. 231, east onto County Road 700S, to County Road 560E and the cemetery.
