CLOVERDALE OFFICER TO RIDE IN MEMORIAL CYCLING EVENT; HONORING FALLEN POLICE OFFICERS AND FAMILIES

May 15, 2007

CLOVERDALE, IN - Cloverdale Police Department Patrolman Jason Baugh will embark upon a grand, 13 day charity adventure next month as a member of COPS Cycling for Indiana C.O.P.S. Patrolman Baugh, along with 24 other full-ride participants and additional part-time riders will bicycle more than 1000 miles around the perimeter of Indiana raising awareness and financial support for the Indiana Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), a support group for survivors of fallen police officers. The COPS Cycling for Indiana C.O.P.S. group consists of active and retired police officers, family and friends of officers killed in-the-line-of-duty.

Indiana C.O.P.S is a great organization and this event is extremely important to our family,” says Baugh, as he will ride in honor of his father, Putnam County Sheriff’s Capt. James Baugh, and all fallen law enforcement officers. “In addition to strengthening the memorial of those lost, this year’s tour is distinctive as I ride in special honor to Lt. Gary Dudley (Indiana State Police), killed during last year’s event along with rider Gary Martin. Dudley was my inspiration while getting back into cycling last summer. He not only gave pointers and checked on my progress, he convinced me to ride a few of the last days of the 2006 tour, which unfortunately never happened.”

Starting Monday, June 18, at the Indiana Police Officers Memorial in downtown Indianapolis, the COPS Cycling group will visit survivors of Indiana’s most recent officers lost in-service and those lost in previous years. The riders will average 70-75 miles daily, spending 7-8 hours per day in the saddle, completing the journey at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, June 30th. The group will make two stops at the Indiana State Police Post in Putnamville for their Putnam County Fraternal Order of Police sponsored lunch on the first day and final day of the tour. Everyone is welcome to visit with the riders to show their support. Encompassed in a full police escort, the riders will pass through the county on U.S. 40, detouring to Capt. Baugh’s gravesite if time allows.

As an added bonus, Sprint Nextel supplies the tour with phones and GPS which will allow anyone with internet access to follow COPS Cycling’s progress online at www.indianacops.org throughout the event.

Baugh is thrilled with the local support, “Cloverdale, the Police Dept. and all of Putnam County is truly coming together for this effort. I’m impressed with the contributions so far, but we still need additional sponsors.”
